Catcher can be a great position for a child who likes being involved in every play, stays focused, handles mistakes well and enjoys helping teammates. It is also physically demanding on the legs, hands and throwing arm, so it suits kids who are willing to work at it and wear their gear properly. The best way to know is to try it with good coaching.
Coach Cinz works with young catchers in his baseball catching lessons and can give you an honest opinion after seeing your athlete. Here is what to think about first.
The upside of playing catcher
- Always in the game: the catcher handles the ball on almost every pitch. Kids who get bored in the outfield often love it.
- Leadership: catchers see the whole field, talk to pitchers and help direct the defense.
- Baseball IQ: catching teaches a player how pitchers work, which can help at the plate too.
- Teams need catchers: the position is always in demand at every level.
The challenges to know about
- Physical load: squatting, blocking and throwing add up. Leg strength and rest matter.
- Mental load: a passed ball or a wild throw happens in front of everyone.
- Gear: catchers need a full set of protective equipment that fits.
- Heat: gear is warm, so hydration is important on summer days.
What makes a good catcher in baseball?
Physical traits
Catchers do not need to be the biggest kid on the team. They do need reasonable leg strength, flexible hips, quick feet and the durability to squat for a full game. Much of this can be developed over time.
Skills
Four skills make up the position: stance, receiving, blocking and throwing. Our guide on how to become a better youth catcher explains each one. None of them are natural talents. They are learned with good reps.
Mindset
This may matter most. A good catcher is tough without being reckless, speaks up with teammates and can reset after a mistake. Coach Cinz develops the mental game alongside mechanics: confidence, mindset and consistency.
Gear
A catcher needs a catcher’s mitt, a helmet or mask, a chest protector, shin guards and a protective cup. Gear should fit snugly and be sized for the athlete, not handed down two sizes too big. Poorly fitting gear leaves gaps and makes it harder to move.
Signs your child might love catching
- They ask to be where the action is.
- They talk to teammates and are not shy about it.
- They are not afraid of the ball.
- They bounce back quickly after a bad play.
- They are curious about why pitchers throw certain pitches.
How to try catcher safely
Start with short stints behind the plate rather than full games. Learn the basic stance and receiving before catching fast pitching. Use soft or tennis balls to learn blocking, as in our catcher blocking drills for youth. If your child’s arm, knees or hands are sore, rest them, and see a doctor or athletic trainer for any pain or injury.
Playing more than one position is also healthy at younger ages. Our youth baseball training page covers building well-rounded skills.
Questions to ask your child first
Before committing to catcher, have a simple conversation. Ask your child why they want to catch and what they enjoy about it. Ask how they feel about wearing gear on hot days and squatting for a whole inning. Ask whether they would like to keep playing other positions too. Their answers tell you a lot about motivation, and they give a coach useful goals to build a plan around.
What if my child wants to catch but struggles?
That is normal. Receiving, for example, takes time. Our guide on how to frame pitches shows how much detail goes into catching a single pitch well. Parents in our reviews say Coach Cinz is patient with kids who learn differently and explains the “why” behind each change, which helps young catchers build confidence. One parent shared that their son improved in both his hitting and his catching.
