What Happens at a Baseball Skills Clinic?

At a baseball skills clinic, a small group of players spends a set block of time on one skill, such as hitting, pitching or fielding. A good clinic follows a clear flow: a proper warm-up, a short teaching segment, focused drills, live or game-like reps, and feedback players can take home. The goal is not just to get sweaty; it is to leave with one or two things that actually change how you play.

At Coach Cinz Baseball, our baseball camps and clinics in Naperville each run for 90 minutes. Here is what that time looks like, and why it is built that way.

1. Check-in and goals

Every session starts with the athlete, not the drill. Coach Cinz wants to know what each player is trying to fix or build. A 10-year-old who keeps rolling over on pitches needs something different from a high schooler working on getting off the mound faster. Knowing the goal shapes the cues each player hears for the rest of the clinic.

2. A real warm-up

Warm-ups are not a formality. Players move through dynamic movement to get loose, then build into light throwing. For pitching and fielding clinics especially, a gradual throwing progression protects young arms and gets the body ready to move well.

3. The teaching segment

This is where the “why” comes in. Parents often mention in reviews that Coach Cinz explains the reason behind every adjustment, and clinics are no exception. The teaching segment is short and specific, and it always comes back to three things: movements, mechanics and, most importantly, timing.

In a Hitting Clinic

Players work on swing technique: how they load, how they get their barrel to the ball, and how they time the pitch so good mechanics hold up against live pitching.

In a Pitching Clinic

Pitchers break the delivery into pieces: balance, break and dangle, stride, arm action and follow-through. They begin with partner throws and then move off the mound. Each pitcher also gets a video breakdown of their mechanics, so they can see what the coach sees.

In a Fielding Clinic

Infielders learn the 6 F’s of a great infielder: Feet, Field, Funnel, Footwork, Fire and Follow. It gives them a simple checklist to run through on every ground ball.

4. Drills with a purpose

Once players understand the idea, they rep it. Drills are chosen to isolate the skill, so the player can feel the change without too much going on at once. A typical progression looks like this:

  1. Slow and exact: the movement done at low speed with full attention.
  2. Game speed: the same movement at full intent.
  3. Add a variable: a different pitch speed, a harder hop, a new location.
  4. Add pressure: a small competition or a count to win.

5. Live action and situations

Drills matter, but the skill has to survive real play. Hitters get live reps, pitchers throw off the mound, and fielders take balls off the bat before finishing with situational plays. This is where timing gets tested, and it is often the most fun part of the session.

6. Feedback and a take-home

A clinic should end with something to keep working on. Players leave with one or two clear cues and a drill they can repeat at home or before practice. The mental side counts too. Coach Cinz works on confidence, mindset and consistency, so players leave believing the change will stick.

What parents can do during the clinic

Parents are welcome to watch, but the most helpful thing is to let the coach coach. Save questions for the end, when you can ask what to practise at home and what to watch for in games. On the drive home, ask your player what they learned rather than how they did. It keeps the focus on the process.

How is a clinic different from a camp?

A clinic zooms in on one skill for a short block. A camp usually covers more ground over a longer day or several days. We compare both, plus private lessons, in our guide to choosing between a clinic, camp or private lessons.

Getting ready for your first clinic

Showing up prepared makes a big difference. Check our list of what to bring to a baseball clinic or camp, and read how to get the most out of a clinic so your player walks in with a goal.

Coach Cinz runs Hitting, Pitching and Fielding Clinics at The Play & Thrive Club Naperville, and seasonal Skills Clinics through the year. See upcoming Skills Clinics or explore all our baseball camps and clinics.
